YOUR ROLE
Your Role At Urban Autism Solutions (UAS), we empower young adults with autism to thrive. Our Growing Solutions Farm (GSF) plays a vital role in this mission by providing meaningful vocational training and fostering a sense of community. As a "Lead Grower and Educator" you will be instrumental in making this happen. You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of farm operations and participant programs related to urban agriculture education and serve as the agricultural liaison for UAS to the larger community of donors, community organizations, and other urban agricultural partners.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Direct and oversee all horticulture activities, including seeding, planting, fertilizing, and harvesting.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive seasonal crop plan, considering factors such as variety selection, planting schedules, and crop rotation.
• Monitor plant health, identify and address pest and disease issues, and implement integrated pest management strategies.
• Manage soil fertility through testing and composting.
• Oversee irrigation systems and water usage.
• Manage harvests for markets, CSA programs, wholesale distribution, and donations to local organizations.
• Design and deliver engaging educational workshops and programs on urban gardening, sustainable farming techniques, and food security.
• Lead farm tours and demonstrations for community members, school groups, and potential volunteers.
• Develop and implement engaging curriculum and teaching materials related to urban agriculture.
• Facilitate hands-on learning experiences in the farm for participants.
• Collaborate with local organizations and community leaders to promote urban agriculture initiatives and build community partnerships.
• Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to support farm operations and educational programs.
• Support the organization with community and fundraising events at the farm and off-site locations (e.g., farmers' markets).
• Respond to inquiries from the public regarding urban gardening practices.
• Work with the UAS senior leadership team to develop new and innovative programs to increase the farm's visibility and impact (e.g., guest chef demonstrations, lunchtime food trucks).
• Maintain and repair farm infrastructure, including raised beds, greenhouses, and irrigation systems.
• Ensure compliance with all local regulations regarding food safety and organic practices.
• Manage the purchasing of necessary supplies and equipment for farm operations.
• Manage capital improvement projects as needed.


REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Proven experience in urban agriculture, including managing small-scale growing spaces and a strong understanding of horticulture and sustainable farming practices.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a farm setting or related field.
• Strong passion for promoting food access and community engagement through urban agriculture.
• Excellent communication and public speaking skills with the ability to effectively teach diverse audiences.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
• Proven ability to multitask, prioritize, and solve problems creatively.
• Physical stamina to perform manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Strong commitment to UAS's mission and values.
• Must be able to access, analyze, and share information, data, and resources online, as well as use digital tools and devices to monitor, control, and optimize their production systems.
• Ability to pass a criminal background check and maintain a valid driver's license.


Physical presence at the Growing Soutions Farm is an essential job function of this role which UAS deems critical to collaboration, innovation, productivity, employee well-being, and enhances company culture.


This position requires the ability to maintain confidentiality as it relates to clients, operations and personnel matters, as outlined in the UAS Personnel Manual and other documents required as a condition of employment.
