About the Role

Growing Solutions Farm is seeking a Seasonal, Part-Time Farm Assistant to support daily operations on our 1.2-acre urban produce farm. This is a hands-on position focused on crop production, harvesting, and general farm maintenance. The ideal candidate enjoys outdoor work, is dependable, and is excited to support a mission-driven farm that combines sustainable agriculture with workforce development for young adults with autism.

Growing Solutions Farm is operated by Urban Autism Solutions and integrates sustainable agriculture with job training, community engagement, and access to fresh, locally grown food. We grow a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers while fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment.

Key Responsibilities

Farm Operations

• Support daily farm tasks including soil prep, planting, weeding, irrigation, pruning, trellising, mulching, and basic pest management

• Assist with harvesting, washing, packing, and storing produce following food safety standards

• Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas

• Support composting, tool care, greenhouse/hoop house tasks, and general farm upkeep

• Assist with weekend watering and other time-sensitive farm needs

• Duties may shift based on seasonal demands

Occasional Support

• Assist with volunteer groups during set-up and clean-up

• Support on-site farmers markets as needed

• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Prior farm or urban agriculture experience strongly preferred

• Interest in sustainable and community-based agriculture

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions

• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs

• Reliable, communicative, and adaptable

• Comfortable using basic technology (email, Google Docs, iPad; training provided)

• Ability to pass a background check and drug screening

• Alignment with the mission and values of Urban Autism Solutions

Schedule & Compensation

• Seasonal: April 1 – October 31 (flexible start/end based on needs)

• 20–24 hours per week; some Saturdays required

• $17–$19/hour, based on experience

• Accrued paid sick leave per Chicago law

• Weekly box of farm-grown produce during harvest season (subject to availability)

• No employer-provided benefits
