Urban Autism Solutions is dedicated to changing outcomes for young adults with autism and related challenges through an integrated community life that advances social and vocational opportunities. At Growing Solutions Farm, our nationally-recognized programming site, students with autism and related challenges (ages 16-22) from West Side Chicago public high schools learn transferable job and life skills through sustainable agriculture while building a
lasting community of diverse learners.

The Assistant Growers will report directly to the Lead Grower and Operations Manager of Urban Autism Solutions’ Growing Solutions Farm. The position pays $16/hour and is a weekly position for up to 22 hours a week for 25 weeks, approximately April to October 2023. Start and end dates are flexible.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

● Horticulture - GSF grows around 100 varieties of crops
● Harvests and sales/donation - washing and packing produce according to GAP standards
● Sanitation - cleaning tables, walk-in cooler, and wash-pack
● Transportation - moving produce as needed to markets and wholesale clients. A work vehicle will be made available for this task
● Landscaping - lawn mowing, weed wacking, and maintenance
● Assist with vocational programming for young adults (16-22 years old) with autism and related challenges
● Assist with preparations for special events and activities
● Represent UAS Growing Solutions Farm to the general public through customer service, working with diverse learners, CPS staff and community members
● Other duties as assigned


● Ability to work with diverse learners and their teachers as well as other UAS staff in an outdoor environment
● A valid driver’s license
● Ability to pass a background check
● Ability to respond to phone calls, texts in a timely manner
● Ability to lift at least 30 pounds
● Communication with program participants, general public, customers, staff
● Ability to use computer, iPad, and Google Platforms
● Ability to be organized and focused in a fast-paced environment
● Ability to work as part of a team
● Understanding of the UAS mission, its programs and services (training will be provided)
● Experience in urban agriculture a plus, but not required

A typical market day:

● Begin at the farm packing up necessary materials: produce, tent, signage, electronics, etc.
● Travel by car (UAS vehicle will be available) to the market(s) as assigned
● Manage the market; this includes setting up the market materials, produce and signage, (use our pictures as a guide), hauling the produce, managing all sales and customer relations, restocking produce and managing and managing payments (cash and card via Square); taking down market
● Return to the farm and complete necessary paperwork, some of which can be done during the market
● Other duties as assigned

Schedule and Hours
● The farm is typically open 8 am - 4 pm Monday through Friday
